# Promotions

> How promotions and demotions work.

Promotions are based on **performance and contribution, not time served.**

## What we look at

* Quality and reliability of your work
* Activity and communication
* Conduct and teamwork
* Initiative and helping others

## Typical paths

* Moderation: Trial Moderator, Moderator, Global Moderator, Senior Moderator, Head Moderator
* Development: grow within your craft toward Lead Developer
* Leadership: invited by the Executive Council

## Demotions

Persistent inactivity or conduct problems can lead to a lower rank.
